The Story of Our Practice
Dr. Mark Clark began practicing as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon in the historic Southside area of Birmingham in 1983. His special interests included wisdom teeth removal, dental implant placement, and orthognathic surgery (“jaw surgery”). He practiced as a solo practitioner until July 2002, when Dr. Jon D. Holmes joined our practice.
Dr. Holmes left a faculty position at The University of Alabama in Birmingham Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery to begin his group practice. His practice of oral surgery also included wisdom teeth removal, dental implants placement, orthognathic surgery (“jaw surgery”), as well as treatment of head and neck cancer.
Shortly following the addition of Dr. Holmes, Dr. George Matthews, Jr., a third experienced surgeon, joined our practice in September 2002. Dr. Matthews had been practicing oral surgery in Birmingham for more than forty years, with his primary interest being wisdom teeth removal.
We maintained our solo location in the Southside area of Birmingham until June 2003, when we opened a secondary office nearby in the city of Trussville.
We continued to grow, and in July 2009 we gained the expertise of our fourth oral surgeon, Dr. Lisa Miller.
ClarkHolmes now serves an even greater expanse of the Birmingham area with a third office location in Inverness, which opened in November 2010.
NOTABLE ACCOMPLISHMENTS associated with ClarkHolmes Oral Facial Surgery:
Dr. Clark was one of the first oral and maxillofacial surgeons to perform orthognathic surgery (“jaw surgery”) on an outpatient in office setting.
Dr. Clark was one of the first oral and maxillofacial surgeons to place tooth formed implants.
Dr. Holmes was the first oral and maxillofacial surgeon in Alabama to perform head and neck cancer surgery.
Dr. Holmes is one of the first oral and maxillofacial surgeons inducted in the American Head and Neck Society.
Dr. Holmes is the only oral and maxillofacial surgeon in Alabama inducted into the American College of Surgeons (FACS).
Dr. Holmes is presently the only oral and maxillofacial surgeon from the state of Alabama on the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Dr. Miller is the first female oral and maxillofacial surgeon to be a part of a group practice in the state of Alabama.
